Episode #29 Old Dogs and New TricksMay 03, 2018
Let's face it, we live in a culture that is obsessed with results. Often that works against us when we are looking to learn something new. The cultural expectations put a lot of "shoulds" in our minds. I should have started this when I was younger. I should have accomplished these goals by this point in my life. If I was ever going to be able to do this, I should have done it by now. When professional beach volleyball player Riley McKibbon discusses working through his frustrations in preseason training, he says, "Should is the demon child of hard work without direction and arbitrary expectations."
Getting your "shoulds" out into the light can bring a ton of clarity to their value in your life. When I do this, I usually find that my "shoulds" are not helping me at all and I happily kick them to the curb. Should is a way or arguing with what IS - and I have never had much success doing that.
So what can we do instead? Keep moving toward the goal without beating yourself up about not being where you expected to be along the path. In this podcast I talk about climbing Half Dome in Yosemite National Park - the journey from start to finish took about 12 hours. 30 minutes were spent on top. For those of you keeping score at home, that's 4.42% result and 95.58% process. Getting too focused on the result means that 95.58% of the journey is miserable. Not only is that not sustainable, it sounds like a pretty lame way to go through life.
The secret to living a fun life - be grateful for the opportunities to grow and love the process!! Sound pretty tough? That's because it's not something you can just switch on and off. It has to become a lifestyle - and that, my friends, is what FitBar is all about. Come live the lifestyle with us!
